English abstract:
Broadband applications are currently the main topics of communication technology. UWB com-
munication systems can be used for high data rate communication. The frequency range, which
was and is very expensive and will run short in future, can be reused, because UWB systems
spread the signal over a wide bandwidth, instead of using single frequencies.
To achieve the ultra-wideband spectrum, very short pulses are used, like in Impulse Radio com-
munication systems and radars in the past. Multi-user networks are possible with the help of
pulse position modulation, orthogonal frequency division multiplex and direct sequence spread
spectrum. The good time domain resolution of the pulses allows the development of location
and tracking applications. Additionally, pulses with a few nanoseconds in duration are immune
to multipath degradation effects.
A number of synonymous terms such as: impulse, carrier-free, baseband, time domain, non-
sinuisoidal and large-relative-bandwidth radio/radar signals are used to describe the UWB radio.
More important advantages of an UWB communication system are the low complexity and low
cost, which derives from the baseband structure of such systems. There is no need for an addi-
tional RF mixing stage, because the pulse signal will propagate without up converting by means
of using a carrier and amplification. Accordingly, in the receiver structure, no down conver-
sion stage is necessary. Because the UWB communication spans a wide frequency range with a
low-power spectral density, it will have no significant interference with other narrow-band radio
systems.
In this thesis several antennas with ultrawideband behaviour are investigated with an efficient
finite integration in time domain.
