Kurzfassung englisch:
In all industry processes where liquids are an intermediate or end product, there is a demand for online measurements of the physical properties of liquids, such as density, viscosity and speed of sound. The continuous monitoring of those quantities is important for quality control and for productivity enhancement. In this paper, a unique resonant piezoelectric sensor based on a bulk acoustic wave (BAW) thickness shear resonator for characterizing the viscosity properties of liquids is investigated and its advantages in terms of high resolution and wide viscosity range are depicted. The sensor is an immersible type viscosity sensor. Measurement results are presented for the viscosity of a reference oil as sample liquid. For the first time, an appropriate analytical sensor response function is applied to a piezoelectric plate resonator covered on both sides by the liquid under test. This sensor response function has been derived as special case of the rigorous general treatment of sensors based on layered piezoelectric resonators according to NOWOTNY. For the measurements the measurement electronics QxSens based on an electrical admittance measurement system that has been developed for the entire BAW sensors family was utilized.
