English abstract:
Ethanol fuel is liquid bio-fuel and therefore an appropriate alternative or admixture to fossil fuels. Similarly, processed biogas can be added to natural gas or can even be used as a substitute natural gas. For this reason, there are various alternative fuels and different concepts to introduce these fuels into the market worldwide. This paper presents the tank-to-wheel effects and potentials of the alternative fuels bioethanol
and biogas on the operating as well as emission characteristics of a gasoline engine in detail.
Because of the composition of different fuels there is a potential of reducing the CO2- emissions by 4% when using a fuel with an amount of 85% Ethanol and by 23% when using a the gaseous fuel like natural gas in comparison to conventional Eurosuper. The existing measuring methods and calculation models (Constant Volume Sampling) for the calculation of vehicle emissions and fuel consumption up
to now exclusively related to the operation of fossil fuel without biogenic portion. Due to these new fuels, adaptations within the juridical set of rules and even within the calculation formulas become urgently necessary.
Vehicle tests on the chassis dynamometer test bench confirm the theoretical considerations. The results of the vehicle tests did not show any significant effects for the limited pollutants (HC, CO, NOx) during the different driving cycles for the low ethanol admixtures up to 10%. A clear deterioration of the CO-emissions and the HCemissions arises in the driving cycles for the fuel mixture with a fraction of 85% ethanol particularly during the cold start at deep temperatures. This result suggests the introduction of a special winter fuel with lowered ethanol fraction (e.g. 75%).
For vehicles operated with fermentation gas/CNG a slight improvement arises for the CO-emission and the NOx-emission, with the HC-emission a clear reduction is found.
The investigated non-limited pollutants increase during cold start, nevertheless, after the catalyst light-off they are converted well.
