The present paper addresses heritage buildings from the energy performance point of view. Starting from general observations regarding the energy performance of existing buildings, the contribution moves on to address a number of more specific challenges pertaining to the energy efficiency considerations in the context of heritage buildings. These include: i) the energy conservation potential of organizational and operational measures and strategies. ii)the variety and scope of technical interventions (thermal retrofti measures), and iii) occupancy considerations (user needs, expectations, attitudes, and behavior). The paper concludes with a case study involving an innovative energy-efficient (passive) indoor climate control approach in a heritage protected building in Vienna, Austria.
