The free and open-source programming language and software environment R
is currently the most widely used and the most popular software for statistics and data
analysis. In this contribution, an overview of the important packages in the above areas
of o cial statistics and survey methodology is given after the usefulness of R in the daily
work in a statistical o ce is givens.
