The staircase at all times represents an essential element of design in structural engineering. As the heart of every building it stands for access, meeting point and communication. The restoration and maintenance of buildings and particularly of staircases is of general importance since new building areas are scarce within conurbations.

Therefore, this work should be treated the topic of the rehabilitation of staircases made of natural stones.

The first chapter of the work gives an overview over the manifold alternatives in design of staircases with regard to the various materials. The further chapters occupy themselves with the detailed outline of the different principles of the design of staircases made of natural stones and with the static assessment of staircases made of natural stones, which are both illustrated in a historical view.
Central elements of the work represent the chapters on the examination of designs made of natural stones according to nowadays state of science in the detection of damages at staircases made of natural stones as well as the consequential methods of rehabilitation.

In order to illumine the topic of the rehabilitation of staircases made of natural stone, the author of the work has compiled two case studies about buildings with staircases made of natural stone based on investigations, site visits and interviews of experts and directly affected persons. They give information on what consequences deficiently conducted rehabilitations or neglected rehabilitations respectively can bear.

The first case study about an incident of more recent times, is dealing with the staircase made of natural stone in the building at Hörlgasse 11/Türkenstraße 10 in the 9th district of Vienna. In this case it has been recognized just in time before an accident occurred that an urgent rehabilitation of the staircase is necessary. An evacuation of the people concerned and respective measures of rehabilitation could be commenced in due time.

The second case study that illumines an incident which dates back several years and took a tragic order of events deals with the causes and consequences of the collapse of a staircase made of natural stone in the house at Elisabethstraße 9 in Vienna's 1st district. This case study is of special interest for the reason that it shows which serious consequences improperly performed measures of rehabilitation of staircases made of natural stone can entail.

With a chapter on the re-assessment of staircases made of natural stones for testing the maximum load and a summary the work closes.

Das Treppenhaus stellt schon seit jeher ein wesentliches Gestaltungselement im Hochbau dar. Als Herz jedes Gebäudes steht es für vertikale Erschließung, Treffpunkt und Kommunikation. Die Sanierung und Erhaltung von Hochbauten und dabei speziell von Treppenhäusern hat generell eine sehr hohe Bedeutung, da neue Bauflächen in den Ballungszentren spärlich vorhanden sind.

Daher soll im Rahmen dieser Arbeit die Thematik der Sanierung von Treppenkonstruktionen aus Naturstein behandelt werden.

Das erste Kapitel der Arbeit gibt einen Überblick über die vielfältigen Konstruktionsmöglichkeiten von Treppen in Hinblick auf die unterschiedlichen Materialen.

Die weiteren Kapitel befassen sich mit der detaillierten Darstellung der unterschiedlichen Konstruktionsprinzipien und mit der statischen Bemessung von Natursteinstiegen, welche aus historischer Sicht beleuchtet werden.

Zentrale Elemente der Arbeit stellen die Kapitel über die Untersuchung von Natursteinkonstruktionen nach dem heutigen Stand der Wissenschaft zur Aufdeckung von Schadensfällen an Natursteintreppen sowie die daraus resultierenden Sanierungs-methoden dar.

Um die Thematik der Sanierung von Natursteintreppen auch praktisch zu beleuchten, haben die Verfasser der Arbeit aufgrund von Recherchen, Begehungen vor Ort und Interviews mit Bauexperten und unmittelbar betroffenen Personen zwei Fallstudien über Gebäude mit Treppenkonstruktionen aus Naturstein erstellt. Diese geben Aufschluss darüber, welche Folgen eine mangelhaft durchgeführte Sanierung bzw. eine unterlassene Sanierung haben können.

Die erste Fallstudie über ein Ereignis aus jüngerer Zeit, befasst sich mit dem Stiegenhaus aus Naturstein in dem Gebäude Hörlgasse 11 / Türkenstraße 10 im 9. Wiener Gemeindebezirk. In diesem Fall wurde gerade noch rechtzeitig, bevor sich ein Unglück ereignet, erkannt, dass eine dringende Sanierung des Treppenhauses notwendig ist. Eine Evakuierung der betroffen Personen und entsprechende Sanierungsmaßnahmen konnten zeitgerecht eingeleitet werden.

Die zweite Fallstudie, die ein Ereignis beleuchtet, dass schon mehrere Jahre zurückliegt und einen tragischen Verlauf nahm, behandelt Ursachen und Folgen des Treppeneinsturzes einer Natursteinstiege im Haus Elisabethstrasse 9 im 1. Wiener Gemeindebezirk. Diese Fallstudie ist gerade aus diesem Grund so interessant, weil sie zeigt, welche folgenschweren Konsequenzen unsachgemäß durchgeführte Sanierungs-maßnahmen an Natursteintreppen mit sich bringen können.
