English abstract:
Collisions of swift heavy ions with insulator targets lead to a damage zone around the path of projectiles, so-called tracks. We theoretically investigate the mechanisms leading to track formation and propose a fully microscopic three-step model that incorporates processes on multiple time scales (see Fig. 1). The appearance of tracks is linked to melting of the target on a nanometric length scale.
