English abstract:
In most cases mudslides show a sequence of normal faults where clayey-silty-sandy-pebbly masses are thrust over downslope lying areas. Coupled flow and mechanical models show that the soaking of water into the ground from top downwards as well as the consequences of the material thrust over the downward lying, less soaked areas create a cyclic process without any indication of a sudden failure of the
complete less permeable, sliding layer. These investigations confirmed that the phenomena of "undrained loading" described by Hutchinson & Bhandari (1971) contributed to the evolution of shear zones forming thrust faults. The consequences of this process model are shown by the example of the Gschliefgraben mudslide (Austria). The process model described has to be the base for the interpretation of monitoring results, for assessment of stability and safety as well as for the design of mitigation measures when dealing with mudslides.
