Kurzfassung englisch:
Mass spectrometry is one of the most powerful techniques for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Its current success owes much to the hyphenation with gas- and liquid chromatographic systems where the separation power of these chromatographic techniques is complemented and enhanced by the selectivity and sensitivity that mass spectrometric detection provides.
The increase in selectivity that was observable in recent years for modern mass spectrometers due to the introduction of MS/MS and/or high mass resolution instruments has led analysts, on the other hand, to trade in much of the achievable chromatographic separation for an increase in analysis speed and sample throughput.
This trend is clearly evidenced by the increasing use of short chromatographic columns, for which, when chromatographic separation is reduced to a minimum [1], flow injection-mass spectrometry (FI-MS) can be regarded as its limiting case. While FI-MS is common practice in inorganic analysis, this is less so in organic (trace) analysis, due to the high complexity of samples at the trace level, and the consequent need for sample preparation [2].
This contribution will discuss to what extent sample preparation actually is necessary for FI-ESI-MS, and to what extent it can be provided by the flow injection procedure itself, or if it will require preceding steps of sample preparation.
The examples presented in this talk come from the field of environmental and food analysis (pesticides), as well as from the analysis of natural substances (proteinaceous materials).
