Ch. Kuehn:
"Critical Transitions with a view towards Neuroscience: Analysis, Models and Numerical Continuation";
Vortrag: Mathematics Colloquium - University of Exeter, Exeter, UK (eingeladen); 12.09.2013.

Kurzfassung englisch:
Critical transitions (or tipping points) are drastic sudden changes in dynamical systems. Recently, various early-warning signs have been proposed to predict a critical transition. We discuss the mathematical background from stochastic fast-slow systems and use these techniques to analyze the FitzHugh-Nagumo equation and also data from epileptic seizures. In the second part of the talk a method to efficiently augment numerical continuation for stochastoc systems will be discussed. An example from binocular rivalry is analyzed and the relation to critical transitions will be
explained.
