Kurzfassung englisch:
The theme of the »temporary« in architecture, planning and urban transformation has been the focus of increasing attention in recent years. Despite a general interest in »instant urbanism« the field still lacks cultural, historic and academic reflection in relation to art, architecture, urban sociology and urban theory. In this context a research network was established in 2012 with the aim of clarifying the theoretical basis and implications of temporal art and architecture in urban environments. The seminar in Copenhagen will orbit three core optics concerning planning strategies, aesthetics in architecture and event culture in relation to instant urbanism. The goal is to discuss and identify key research questions and to introduce a »call for papers« for an academic conference at Aalborg University spring 2014.
TEMPORARY USES AS A STRATEGIC TOOL FOR URBAN TRANSFORMATION
Increasingly cultural activities and temporary intervention are used by developers as a strategic site preparation tool to attract investments in the transformation of urban areas. Beyond economic benefits, how can short-term initiatives contribute to place and community long-term?
AESTHETICS OF TEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE - BUILDING THE CITY 1:1
A new aesthetics is developing in the public realm through interim approaches to art and architecture installations. What new positions are emerging for architectural design, site transformation and social interaction through these practices? How does the 1:1 approach relate to notions of aesthetics and to traditional methods of design and production?
EVENT CULTURE, ACTIVIST INTERVENTION AND URBAN NARRATIVES
Urban activists and cultural entrepreneurs reinterpret the urban fabric with new uses, events and narratives. This creates a new arena for involvement and dialogue. How can these bottom-up approaches to the city be read into a larger cultural context? What happens to place when the event culture goes home?
