English abstract:
Search systems play an important role in information technology as the volume of digitally available content constantly increases. Consumer-oriented electronic commerce (e-commerce) systems such as the software market "Google Play" or the online market "Amazon" are prime examples. Classic approaches, such as keyword-based search, are often no longer sufficient for locating the correct content. Many users are also unable to express their search needs due to insufficient knowledge of the contents of the system. In consideration of such problems, this masterīs thesis presents a model that is universally and cost-effectively usable for recommendation-based, consumer-oriented e-commerce systems. In the course of explaining this model, relevant elements and their connections are described.
The results of the comprehensive literature research clearly show that semantic technologies are best suited for the generation of intelligent search term recommendations in support for users engaged in searching. Two relevant basic models have been identified. The first is a vector space model, which is used for instance for relevance determination of content; the second is the descriptive logic used for creating a knowledge base in the form of an ontology. The data format of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), "Web Ontology Language" (OWL), proved best suited for the ontology. This permits the depiction of search terms, their interrelationships and rules for recommendations of additional search terms. The simple creation and maintenance of the knowledge base are also possible using Protegé, a tool developed at Stanford University. The search function in the model is implemented with the open source search server Solr, which is also used by major online services such as Twitter and Wikipedia. Insights from the DOPE system, which originated in 2003, influenced the use of semantic technologies as well as the design of user interfaces in the model presented here. Apart from the technical solution, other related issues - such as legal aspects, usability criteria and methods for better search results - are also discussed. For example, the Data Privacy Act (Datenschutzgesetz) and the Telecommunications Act (Telekommunikationsgesetz) are of essential importance to operators of e-commerce systems in Austria.
An analysis and tests of existing systems brought new insights regarding the model development and subsequently regarding the design of sample cases. The model was then adapted to these sample cases, which consist of a software center with an innovative ranking system and a job exchange with agent function. The sample cases demonstrate the potential of the basic model described here.
