Kurzfassung englisch:
The buildings of the Vienna International Centre (Y:IC) were designed and constructed in 1970s using standards and building codes of the time. However, given the technological advancements in building enclosure technology ever since (particularly glazing systems),
there is a concern on the side ofVIC's facility management (FM) that the energy perfonnance of VIC is not in line with the current building practices and standards. Moreover, the new EU directive on the energy perfonnance of buildings (Directive 2002/911EC) requires the
member states to set minimum standards in new and existing buildings and to introduce energy certification processes and documents for buildings. Specifically, the member states are required (Article 6) that in case of larger renovation activities for existing buildings with more than 1000 m2 usable area, the energy performance should be upgraded to the minimum requirements level (Article 4). In this context, the present study explores the relationship between the thermal properties of the glazing in VIC's enclosure and the energy performance of VIC office floors, resulting in estimates of the potential for heating and cooling load reduction.
