Kurzfassung englisch:
We present a microfluidic system for the rapid concentration and detection of
bacteria. The principle is based on electrophoretic enrichment of bacteria at a
hydrogel membrane between two big on-chip reservoirs. Prior to the injection of a
sample, bacterial cells are fluorescently labeled with a membrane permeant nucleic
acid stain. Fluorescence intensity detection is achieved by a low cost system
consisting of a diode laser for excitation and a Raspberry pi computer with an
included CMOS camera. Total numbers of bacteria can be determined within
minutes. The entire setup is compact, easy to handle and cost-efficient.
