Upon impact on a surface slow highly charged ions not only deposit kinetic
energy but also a substantial amount of potential energy. This energy deposition leads to
a variety of emission phenomena (emis
sion
of electrons, photons, atoms, secondary
ions) and may also result in pronounced modification of the surface and near
-
surface
regions (change in composition and structure, defect production, sputtering of
and/or
formation of nano
-
sized structures on th
e surface). This tutorial will introduce
some of the basic concepts and methods used in this field with the help of a few
illustrative examples.
