This paper explores the effectiveness of a specific energy simulation tool embedded into widely used CAD platform. The evaluation adresses issues of general usability, decision making support and reliability. Energy simulation, if applied in the early design stages, is assumed to support design decision making and improve the future performance of buildings. One of the strategies to provide designers with timely feedback on performance implications of their design solutions involves the integration of simulation functionalities into design developement software (CAD, BIM). Thus, design, evaluation and optimization activities would be accommodated within a unified compuational environment. Based on a single-user perspective, the present analysis addresses the properties, existing problems, and future opportunities of this integrated design and simulation tool.
