Buildings are expected to provide adequate indoor environments. Toward this end, multiple requirements must be met, including proper design of building fabric and envelope, adequate selection and sizing of the building service systems, and effective building controls and operation. Certain shortcomings regarding the indoor environmental quality of existing buildings can be traced back to insufficient consideration of the above requirements and - especially - lack of their integration. In previous publications, an approach was presented to improve the conceptualization and representation of buildings' environmental control systems and associated control processes. Thereby, a methid was introduced to derive a general scheme for the distribution of the logic regarding systems control and automation in complex buildings. To empirically explore the viability of the scheme generation method, a test was conducted involving a number of architecture and engineering students. The present paper describes this tests and its results.
