The paper at hand offers an overview of Austria´s status quo (in 2013/2014) in terms of fast broadband penetration and a brief description of select, established and high-capacity communications technology options. This is followed by a description of Austria´s National Broadband Strategy 2020 in its European context (the EU initiative Digital Agenda for Europe) and in comparison to the German and Swiss concepts. Additionally, the paper discusses ongoing Austrian supply- and demand-based broadband funding programs. To conclude, remaining broadband deployment challenges and potential improvement suggestions - e. g. an adequate national commitment to Austria's broadband roll-out to improve international competitiveness and shorten the Digital Divide - are addressed.

Der Artikel bietet einen Überblick zum Status quo der Breitbandversorgung in Österreich (Stand: 2013/2014) und eine Kurzeinführung zu den wichtigsten Technologiestandards der Breitband-Kommunikation. Des Weiteren werden die politischen Agenden zum Breitbandausbau auf europäischer und nationaler Ebene (Ö, D, CH) verglichen, sowie ein detaillierter Blick auf die österreichische Breitband-Förderlandschaft geworfen. Den Abschluss bildet ein Plädoyer, den Breitbandausbau durch adäquates staatliches Commitment - etwa aus Gründen internationaler Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und gesellschaftlicher Teilhabe in peripheren Gebieten - voranzutreiben.
