As Human-Computer-Interaction (HCI) practitioners and technology designers, we often inadvertently inscribe values and notions beyond what we intended in the systems we design. Further, while we aim to work from a user- and use-centred perspective, we often still miss the perspectives of other critical stakeholders and the broader context. Reflecting on issues of responsible innovation from the bottom up, I will discuss some of our HCI experiences in trying to engage in value-led responsible design using two exemplar cases: designing for older people and health care agendas, and designing for eco-behaviour change agendas. While very different in focus, both highlight the importance that different conceptualisations have on shaping possible solutions, and the challenge of identifying and negotiating competing agendas. This draws attention beyond responsible design just as a process, to also consider responsible designers, as reflective practitioners aware of their power in inscribing possible futures.
