Kurzfassung englisch:
The initial oxidation of Zr was studied at low oxygen pressure (10-7 - 10-8 mbar) on a polycrystalline Zr foil and on a Zr nanotip, applying in situ FIM, PEEM and XPS in order to identify the role of suboxides during the initial Zr oxidation. Existence of such suboxides between the ZrO2 overlayer and the metal surface was suggested by early AP observations.
The presence of three suboxide components (Zr+1, Zr+2 and Zr+3) has been detected in a suboxide interlayer, located between the Zr surface and a stoichometric ZrO2 overlayer. In addition, the sole suboxide layer has been observed at very early states of the oxidation (oxygen exposure ≤ 4L). The PEEM and FIM observations are in accord with a two stage process of Zr oxide formation.
