Kurzfassung englisch:
Ashta hydropower plant is situated on River Drin in the north of Albania and consists of two power plants and a 5 km long drainage channel between the sites. The total capacity of 45 Hydromatrix turbines for each power plant is 53 MW (242 GWh). Construction was started in spring 2010 and was finished in the beginning of 2013.
Due to the adjacent Drin River and unfavourable geological conditions comprising an extraordinary high permeability of the ground the focus of the construction had to be put on numerous geotechnical aspects. The main geotechnical challenges in the scope of the construction of the power plants appeared in the design and the execution of the pit walls including the retaining structure and the dewatering scheme. Moreover, the earthworks for the 5 km long headrace channel required underwater earthmoving and the development of a novel concept for bottom sealing of the channel. A new kind of geo-synthetic clay liner (GCL) consisting of bentonite granules between non-woven layers was produced and an innovative system was installed in order to place the GCL under water with sufficient accuracy.
In spite of the complex geological and geotechnical conditions found on site foundation works and earthworks could be accomplished in time since all project partners stepped up efforts in order to attain all the project goals.
