Volkswirtschaftlich gesehen ist dem Hochwasserschutz eine zentrale Bedeutung beizumessen. National und grenzüberschreitend wird damit beträchtliches Volks- und Privatvermögen geschützt. Die katastrophalen Hochwasserereignisse der letzten Jahrzehnte haben das enorme Schadenspotenzial dieser Naturgefahr aufgezeigt. Die Geotechnik leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag für zuverlässig funktionierende Hochwasserschutzdämme. In Österreich erfolgte eine umfassende Überarbeitung der technischen Anforderungen. Neue Wege wurden beschritten, um bestehende nicht dem Stand der Technik entsprechende Erdbauwerke mit innovativen Bau- und Verdichtungsmethoden zu verbessern.

From the economic point of view great importance needs to be attached to flood protection systems since they shelter national and/or transnational wealth and private means to a major extent. In the last decades catastrophic floods revealed the enormous damage potential of natural hazards. Geotechnical engineers make an important contribution to provide for more reliable flood protection dikes. In Austria remarkable efforts were made to revise specifications and to improve existing flood protection dikes using novel approaches to reconstruct and compact inadequate earth structures.
