Kurzfassung deutsch:
(no german version available) This contribution addresses a fundamental question of energy-conscious building planning: How does an existing, yet to be adapted and retrofitted building perform in comparison to a planned-from-scratch new building? In this context the present contribution illustrates the results of a case study: Two objects, a yet-to-be-adapted residential house built in the early 1950ies and an alternative in form of a yet-to-be-build new building are compared regarding i) thermal performance and energy efficiency, ii) ecological footprint, and iii) cost. Given the fact that most clients decide to invest in a specific building - new or existing - and then use the building for an average time-span of 30 years, the energy efficiency was evaluated over such a period of time. As in the planning of both the new building and the retrofit design of the existing building different design options were available, a set of different scenarios were created. For each of these scenarios calculations and numeric simulations were performed.
