Acoustic emissionsignalsintribologycanbeusedformonitoringthestateofbodiesin
contact andrelativemotion.Therecordedsignalincludesinformationwhichcanbe
associatedwithdifferentevents,suchastheformationandpropagationofcracks,
appearanceofscratchesandsoon.Oneofthemajorchallengesinanalyzingthese
acousticemissionsignalsistoidentifypartsofthesignalwhichbelongtosuchanevent
and discernitfromnoise.Inthiscontribution,awaveletpacketdecompositionwithinthe
frameworkofmultiresolutionanalysistheoryisconsideredtoanalyzeacousticemission
signalstoinvestigatethefailureoftribologicalsystems.Byapplyingthewaveletpacket
transform amethodfortheextractionofsingleeventsinrailcontactfatiguetestis
proposed. Theextractionofsucheventsatseveralstagesofthetestpermitsaclassifica-
tion andtheanalysisoftheevolutionofcracksintherail.
