English abstract:
The abundance of iron in the earth crust is high, and for most species, iron is an essential trace-nutrient. However, its solubility in sea-water is low, thus limiting possible (phytoplankton-) growth. To better understand this iron-deficiency in oceans, reliable quantification is necessary. ICP-MS offers the required sensitivity, but the saline matrix is problematic. Contrarily, ICP-OES is less affected by the matrix, but it lacks the detection power to quantify iron-concentrations of typically 0.5 µg L-1.
Here, we present a pre-concentration technique that allows analyzing iron in seawater via ICP-OES. The applied technique combines "dispersed-particle-extraction" (aqueous medium, no memory-effects, high throughput, e.g., with task-specific ionic liquids (target-specific, easily customized, high retention capacity).
