English abstract:
A multitude of international and national standards aim at ensuring transparence and accountability with regard to building performance criteria. However, there are few studies that address the effectiveness of these standards in view of building design and retrofit support. In certain instances, standards are even perceived as burdens that restrain creativity and increase administrative overhead with little design improvement functionality. As an illustrative case in point, the present contribution focuses on the usability and effectiveness of lighting standards. Toward this end, i) interviews and questionnairies were conducted with a number of lighting professionals concerning the applicability of specific normative documents in typical design projects; ii) an experiment with student participants explored the usability of a widely used lighting standard as applied to typical design evaluation tasks.
