Recent advances in laser technology have a strong impact on new developments in science and technology. In particular they offer new solutions to difficult measurement problems in chemical sensing especially when rapid, direct and destruction free measurements are needed. As such laser based mid-IR and Raman sensing are of special importance. Advanced laser technologies are key for the development of a range of new approaches for trace gas detection, nano-IR microscopy as well as stand-off detection of explosives. This talk will provide an overview of the current state of the art of mid-IR lasers and bifunctional materials (laser and detector) as well as report on examples of most recent applications.
