Kurzfassung englisch:
A standardized approach to achieving wireless synchronization over WLAN can bring forward a unified synchronization tool, instead of various customized timing protocols, for providing synchronized clocks for instrumentation and measurement applications. This work focuses on the Timing Advertisement (TA) scheme of IEEE 802.11 which is capable of providing application synchronization. To carry out accurate and precise synchronization with this scheme, a Kalman Filter for rate estimation is proposed at the access point, and a PI controller for offset and rate correction is proposed at the node, both of which can be implemented in commercial hardware. Although simulation results show that this scheme can provide synchronization under 5μs, the WLAN standard should do minor modifications to its internal synchronization mechanism and provide more guidelines in order to simplify the implementation on existing hardware. Otherwise, a customized protocol implementation over WLAN appears to be a simpler option than to implement the TA mechanism on commercial devices.
