Kurzfassung englisch:
Inelastic neutron scatting (INS) is a fundamental microscopic technique to study the energy and momentum dependence of excitations related to lattice-, spin-, and orbital degrees of freedom in solids. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) is a closely related form of INS applied to study excitations related to random interactions such as diffusive motion in liquids, biomolecular dynamics or paramagnetic spin-fluctuations. We will review the principles of INS and QENS, some basic instrumental setups and methods.
As an example we briefly spotlight INS and QENS studies of magnetic excitations related to crystal electric field effects as well as paramagnetic fluctuations in CeNi9Ge4 and related compounds. Ce-based intermetallic compounds are at present interest due to their large complexity of electronic ground states and quantum critical phenomena resulting from the competition between different types of interactions: (i) on-site Kondo correlations between 4f and conduction electrons; (ii) RKKY-type Ce-Ce intersite interactions and (iii) crystalline electric field effects.
