English abstract:
Dolores Hayden´s article of 1981 is a short version of her book The Grand Domestic Revolution and it its key arguments are still valid today, 36 years later. The political dimensions are still key factors for the success or failure of women´s housing projects. The ideal image of housing has not changed since the 1950s. Whether in Austria or in the US people are still dreaming of a single family house with a huge garden. Housing expenses are constantly growing: today in the US half of the families live as "liquid asset poor". Hayden´s statement that the separation between private and public space hast o become an issue is more true than ever. Private ground makes it very difficult to start non-commercial, community based services and community infrastructure. A non-sexist city can only function in a non-sexist society that shares collective values and social responsibility.
