English abstract:
Surface soil moisture products derived from the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) on-board the satellites Metop-A and Metop-B are generated at various spatial scales (from 50 km to 1 km) and available in different product categories (Near Real-Time, Offline, Climate Data Record). The Metop ASCAT surface soil moisture products are provided as part of the EUMETSAT Satellite Application Facility (SAF) on support to operational hydrology and water management (H SAF) project. A semi-empirical change detection method developed by TU Wien is used to compute surface soil moisture information expressed in degree of saturation. The paper summarizes the latest challenges and advances in the TU Wien soil moisture retrieval algorithm, the Metop ASCAT surface soil moisture products and their areas of applications.
