"Emerging Fields In Architecture: Overcoming Gravity And The Wonderful World Of Space";

English abstract:
At the Vienna University of Technology, the field of Space Architecture is integrated into the research and teaching activities of the Institute for Architecture and Design (Department HB2) as part of the curriculum for the Master of Science in Architecture. Enrolled students learn about building and living in extreme environments, go into the question of innovation: spatially, socially and technologically, and discuss architectural designs from fiction towards realisation. Discussion and ideas that go radically beyond the traditional way of thinking are encouraged. By surveying architectural themes and challenges from an unusual perspective, a process of re-thinking can be triggered that eventually can lead to finding the `right´ question resulting in innovative and useful design solutions. This article presents examples of educational practices illustrated with space architecture student projects from the Vienna University of Technology. Works range from futuristic ideas to 1:1 prototyping. It further explores the benefits as a an educational strategy for qualifying students towards interdisciplinary working processes and transfering know-how from emerging fields; as well as a general discussion on creative processes leading to innovation.
