English abstract:
Growing photovoltaic (PV) panel waste causes a new environmental challenge, but on the
other hand opportunities to create value and to open new economic paths. The main vision
of the H2020 project CABRISS http://www.spire2030.eu/cabriss is the implementation of a
circular economy based on recycling, reused and recovered indium, silicon and silver materials
for photovoltaic and other applications (electronic and glass industry). Proactive involvement
in European standardization guarantees compatibility with the EU´s WEEE directive. European
Standards not only contribute to the prevention and reduction of waste but also to providing
tools for characterization, collection and treatment of waste, including the recovery and
recycling of rare and valuable materials. Thus "circular economy" proactively helps to turn
end-of-life PV into a resource and to improve the design in the philosophy of reducing the
generation of waste.
CABRISS cooperates with SEMI´s "TC Photovoltaics", CENELEC´s CLC/TC 111X "Environment"
and TC10 "Ecodesign". Acknowledgment: This project has received funding from the European
Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, under grant agreement No 641972.
