English abstract:
This chapter portrays an approach and particular case of
developing research culture in architecture across practice, research
organization, and education that commenced in the mid-1990s in
the context of the OCEAN, an interdisciplinary network that pursues
research-by-design activities across the creative sector, and more
specifically architecture and urban design. These efforts were increasingly linked with teaching activities at numerous schools, including the Architectural Association in London and the Research Centre for Architecture and Tectonics at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. In parallel OCEAN members began to research also the development of research in architectural practices and its own context in order to develop specifically targeted research strategy and development. This was linked with PhD and more specifically industrial PhD tracks in Oslo and examination of the lateral networks that emerged between practitioners with formal research capacity.
