Kurzfassung englisch:
In a previous communication [1], the project MICRA (Microbially Influenced Corrosion Risk Assessment) was introduced. In short, it is related to the development of an autonomous device (MICRA-buoy) which can be placed in natural water bodies for registering electrochemical data of a number of metallic material specimens during biofilm formation in the authentic environment. Such data provide information on the corrosion conditions a material is exposed to and particularly the corrosion risk bearing effect of microbial ennoblement can be detected. Such investigations are of great interest in hydropower projects, but are potentially applicable also to other systems where metallic materials are exposed in natural waters.
So far, three MICRA-buoy prototypes have been in use in different locations, the recorded data (basically the free corrosion potentials) were evaluated, and exposed specimens were investigated. The results gained will be presented and allow to conclude that the technical concept of MICRA-buoy is indeed feasible. It not only provides information related to corrosion conditions but also to certain biofilm characteristics.
Based on these experiences, prototype MICRA-buoy 4.0 was planned and its design will be presented. Besides free corrosion potentials, the currents of up to four galvanic couples can be monitored, and a potentiostatic function allows for actively driven electrochemical experiments at selected times while the buoy is exposed. Such experiments are of interest not only in relation to the corrosion stability of a metal, but also in relation to the possible cathodic properties of the metal-biofilm system. An integrated wireless communication allows for testing the functionality in the fully assembled state, for configuring the device, and for data readout.
