"Die Windbrechtingers. Leben Gesinnung Werk";

The diploma thesis written at the department of Kunstgeschichte, Bauforschung und
Denkmalpflege is concerned with the life and work of the architects Traude and Wolfgang
Windbrechtinger and sets the focus on their values and working morale. The small but
valuable bequest of the architects in the archive of the Architekturzentrum Wien serves as a
basis for the first access to the topic. The paper is intended to answer the question concerning
the visionary thought and advanced ideas in the architects´ work and discusses why their
attitude toward architecture can be considered progressive even in our days. The first part of
the paper deals with the years of study and education of the two architects at the Graz
University of Technology. It describes the historical background of the postwar period, which
had a significant impact on their lives and work. The second part treats the professional career
and the notable stations in the life of Traude and Wolfgang Windbrechtinger. The third part
gives an overview of the wide variety of the architects´ work. Each chapter starts with an
introduction of the building task and illustrates the temporal context by giving examples of
other contemporaneous projects. This is followed by a presentation of selected buildings
against the background of the time of origin and their function in the present.

Die theoretische Diplomarbeit am Institut für Kunstgeschichte, Bauforschung und
Denkmalpflege behandelt das Leben und Werk des Architektenehepaars Windbrechtinger und
legt den Fokus auf die besondere Werte- und Arbeitshaltung der Architekten. Als Grundlage
für den Einstieg in die Thematik dient der überschaubare, aber wertvolle Nachlass von Traude
und Wolfgang Windbrechtinger im Architekturzentrum Wien. Die Arbeit geht der Frage nach
dem Neuen und Visionären im Werk der Architekten nach und erörtert, wieso deren
Baugesinnung auch für die heutige Zeit als fortschrittlich betrachtet werden kann. Die Arbeit
behandelt im ersten Teil das Studium der Architekten an der Technischen Hochschule Graz.
Dabei wird vor allem auf den historischen Hintergrund der Nachkriegsjahre eingegangen, der
das Leben und Werk der Windbrechtingers maßgebend geprägt hat. Im zweiten Teil wird der
berufliche Werdegang und die darin bedeutenden Lebensstationen und -orte thematisiert. Der
dritte Teil gibt einen Überblick über das vielfältige Werk der Architekten. Am Beginn steht
jeweils eine thematische Einleitung zur Bauaufgabe, die den zeitlichen Kontext
veranschaulicht und anhand von Beispielen aus dem Umfeld der Windbrechtingers eine
Verortung ihres Werkes ermöglicht. Es folgt die Darstellung ausgewählter Projekte, sowohl
vor dem Hintergrund ihrer Entstehungszeit als auch ihrer Funktion in der Gegenwar
