English abstract:
The construction industry is undergoing a radical transformation towards digitization and interconnectedness. The rise of new technologies, such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), is an opportunity for the industry to redesign the existing processes in all project phases, from tendering to planning to execution to facility management.
One of the technologies with the highest potential for influencing the construction industry is Augmented Reality (AR). The objective of this diploma thesis is to analyze how this technology can be applied in the inspection and supervision of technical building equipment to improve and accelerate the existing inspection processes.
The diploma thesis begins with a detailed analysis of the current trends reshaping the construction industry and aims to present AR in a wider context of the digital transformation. The state of the art solutions, both in the terms of software and hardware, are presented along with the codes and legal regulations that need to be complied with.
Interviews with experts from the field of construction supervision build a basis for analyzing the status quo of supervision and inspection processes. These processes are documented in workflow diagrams with the use of Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN).
Documentation supplied by the interview partners allowed for creating a classification system for most common defects occurring during the installation of technical building equipment on a building site. The proposed classification system based on the IFC standard can be directly implemented in any AR-based solution for improving the existing processes.
The main part of this diploma thesis is dedicated to the analysis of existing processes and the conceptual design of an AR-based tool for technical building equipment inspection and supervision. The design follows the rules of User Centered Design (UCD) and is split into multiple stages. First, the strategy and objectives of the AR-based tool are elaborated upon. Then, these objectives are translated into concrete functionalities that need to be supplemented within the tool. Lastly, the proposed features are put together in a navigation scheme and visualized using graphical mockups of the tool´s interface. The mockups were improved during iterative feedback rounds with interview partners.
The interface of the AR-based tool binds together all of the results of this diploma thesis. The proposed solution can be integrated seamlessly into the existing supervision processes, and the defect classification system can be implemented in the AR-based tool to provide the user with relevant suggestions.
