"Einsatzmöglichkeiten und Anwendungsgrenzen von Augmented Reality im Bauprozess mit DAQRI Smart Glasses";
2020; 60 pages.

English abstract:
The Center of Digital Building Processes at the TU Wien deals with the aspects and processes of the digitization of the building industry. A core element is the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM), especially as openBIM.

Another pillar of digitization is Mixed Reality. In this area, the Center of Digital Building Processes focuses its research on the use of Augmented Reality in construction. Two very innovative research projects are currently running:
AR-AQ-Bau - Use of Augmented Reality for acceptance and quality assurance on construction sites with the research partners FCP (Fritsch, Chiari und Partner), ARIOT and the research unit Computer Graphics at TU Wien. In the first year also the AR hardware and software company Daqri Holographics Gmbh & Co KG was member of the research consortium.

BRISE-Vienna - Building Regulations Information for Submission Envolvement with the research partners Stadt Wien, TBW-ODE (Office for Digital Engineering), the Chamber of Architects and chartered Engineering Consultants Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland as well as WH Media GmbH.

The research project AR-AQ-Bau focuses on the use of AR glasses (as opposed to tablets). They offer the advantage of hands free work. In the first year, the research team used the DAQRI Smart Glasses, the company Daqri Holographics Gmbh & Co KG was a research partner at that time. Therefore, this research report analyses the application possibilities of Augmented Reality in construction process with regard to the use of Head-Mounted-Displays on the basis of experiments with DAQRI Smart Glasses.

A very important aspect is the correct positioning of the AR model in the real environment. Especially construction sites pose great challenges for AR glasses: supoptimal lighting conditions, surfaces with very uniform colors and rarely permanently fixed identification points. DAQRI Smart Glasses offer several application, one of them is Scan. This function lets the user scan the environment. DAQRI Smart Glasses uses the same technology for Scan as for the tracking of the virtual model. Therefore, tests of the accuracy of the Scan function can provide information about the accuracy of the tracking. The main part of the research report presents the description, evaluation and discussion of the tests carried out for this purpose.

Another important function is Model: BIM Edition. One chapter analyses the functions of DAQRI Smart Glasses to visualize the BIM model in the real environment. Finally, on the basis of the test results, possible fields of application in construction are defined, suggestions for improving hardwqre and software components are formulated and an outlook for future use is given.

The research report closes with conclusions and attached test protocols.

German abstract:

Dazu laufen derzeit zwei sehr innovative Forschungsprojekte:
