Earthworks are complex, requiring a sound basic knowledge of soil mechanics, familiarity with experimental techniques in the laboratory and in the field, and a deep understanding of the physical processes in the soil. Earthworks are highly interdisciplinary, multifaceted, as well as innovative and developmental. Earthworks are among the largest of all construction measures, which also present challenges in terms of construction logistics and construction process engineering. The time component and weather conditions have a decisive influence on the soil properties and thus also on the construction process. Earthworks are always accompanied by the imponderables of the subsoil. A holistic understanding of the matter, engineering action and a high degree of flexibility are indispensable prerequisites for the implementation of earthwork projects.

Der Erdbau ist komplex, erfordert ein fundiertes bodenmechanisches Grundwissen, Vertrautheit mit den Versuchstechniken im Labor und im Feld sowie ein tiefes Verständnis für die physikalischen Vorgänge im Boden. Erdarbeiten sind im höchsten Maße interdisziplinär, vielfältig sowie innovations- und entwicklungsträchtig. Erdbauwerke gehören zu den größten aller Baumaßnahmen, die zudem baulogistische und bauverfahrenstechnische Herausforderungen darstellen. Die zeitliche Komponente und die Witterung beeinflussen entscheidend die Bodeneigenschaften und damit auch den Bauablauf. Erdbaumaßnahmen sind stets begleitet von den Unwägbarkeiten des Untergrundes. Ein gesamtheitliches Verständnis für die Materie, ingenieurmäßiges Handeln und ein hohes Maß an Flexibilität sind unabdingbare Voraussetzungen für die Umsetzung von erdbaulichen Projekten.
