English abstract:
Currently, the financial services industry discusses the potential of smart contracts. The traditional financial sector stays decades behind the technical possibilities and struggles because of the inefficient processes, settlement delays, fraud, overheads, and concentration of risks. The concept of smart contracts allows automated and decentralized execution of predefined processes on the blockchain using rules and execution instructions, which offers considerable automation potential. Since smart contracts can transfer money promptly, shorter settlement times would reduce foreign exchange risk on international transactions. An advantage of cost and speed is inevitable because trades are executed and settled peer-to-peer and do not have to go through multiple servers and clearinghouses with semiautomatic compliance examinations. The distributed consensus-building technique offers the elimination of a trusted third party in business processes in the process execution and authentication operations.
The purpose of this thesis is to identify the potential benefits of smart contracts for financial institutions and their clients and prove that smart contracts have the potential to discard inefficient business processes. How specific traditional derivative financial transaction models and their pain points can be improved and optimized using smart contracts will be studied. The intention is to have automated and decentralized transactions, eliminate the need for third-party intermediaries, reduce costs, settlement times and fees so that the new models can be beneficial for financial institutions.
In order to test whether these new models can be beneficial, a proof-of-concept implementation is designed and proposed using Ethereum smart contracts based on the derivative financial instrument: options. A prototype with Solidity smart contracts and JavaScript user interface is implemented, and an equivalent process design is aimed. Conclusively, this prototype is evaluated through expert interviews based on a guideline. The results showed that the improvements and optimizations of the proposed concept are suitable to discard the pain points in the traditional process. The experts´ responses approved the improvement through the created trade pool logic, automated price feed, prompt settlement, and transparency in terms of automation and decentralization, time and cost reduction, third-party elimination, decreasing operational and counterparty risks.
