This thesis looks closely at the turbulent pasts and possible, architectural futures of El Chorrillo, a historical district in Panama City´s old town and former home to workers of the nearby Panama Canal. After conducting primary research on two separate excursions to El Chorrillo in 2018 and based on subsequent research findings, the author proposes concepts for urban development of a specifically-selected quarter in El Chorrillo. Looking closely at issues of densification and housing, this thesis focuses on the dismantling of the predominant mono-functionality, the addition of public and open spaces, and the development of a training and leisure centre with focus on sports. While the neighbouring district of San Felipe has developed into a nightlife hub and tourist hotspot through extensive redevelopments, El Chorrillo has become overshadowed by a sparsely reappraised history, the marginalisation of its inhabitants, and unilaterally-planned urban development. This work provides insights into an area often avoided by outsiders and overlooked by the general public, and offers a vision for the future of El Chorrillo.

Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Bezirk El Chorrillo, einem Teil der historischen Altstadt von Panama-Stadt, seiner bewegten Vergangenheit und einer möglichen Zukunft. Auf Basis gesammelter Erkenntnisse aus zwei mehrwöchigen Exkursionen im Jahr 2018 wurden Ziele formuliert, um anschließend in Form eines städtebaulichen Entwurfs die Aufwertung eines gewählten Quartiers in El Chorrillo darzustellen. Der Fokus liegt dabei, neben den Themen Nachverdichtung und Wohnbau, vor allem auf dem Abbau der vorherrschenden Monofunktionalität, der Schaffung bislang fehlender öffentlicher Freiräume und einer Ausbildungs und Freizeitstätte mit dem Schwerpunkt Sport. Diese Arbeit soll einen Einblick in diesen sonst von der Öffentlichkeit gemiedenen Stadtteil geben, ein Bild seiner stolzen Bewohner nach außen tragen und eine Vision aufzeichnen. Geschichtlich betrachtet gründet El Chorrillo auf einem Vorstadtviertel außerhalb der Befestigungsanlagen des Stadtkerns San Felipe, und diente ab dem 20. Jahrhundert als Wohnsiedlung für Arbeiter des Panamakanals. Während sich der benachbarte Bezirk San Felipe aktuell durch umfangreiche Sanierungen der letzten Jahre als Zentrum des Nachtlebens und touristischem Hotspot entwickelt hat, ist El Chorrillo überschattet von spärlich aufgearbeiteter Geschichte, einer Marginalisierung seiner Bewohner und einseitig geplanter Stadtentwicklung.
